Beating up on MORE tires!

Well, I had some time tonight, as LTGal was out at a movie and we pressed Kidlet#2 into babysitting LTBabe… But I just haven’t worked up the nerve to hone the cylinder yet… So, I thought, after my adventure in tires over these past two weeks, I thought I would get motivated and try popping some tires off on my own, just for giggles… This past weekend, I went out to my dad’s plant to do some mowing for him, and while I had a bit of spare time (and the old rusty rims from Bror in the truck), I thought I’d try Team_Green’s recommendation for easily popping beads on tires… HE said, it never fails for him, take a 2 x 6, place it on the tire close up to the rim, then drive up the 2 x 6 with your truck… Sure, I thought, I can do that!

Or not…. And that was even a 2 x 8… Okay, so I had a mallet, a wrecking bar, a tire iron and a screwdriver in the truck, so I went after it for a while… DANG that’s hard work… I managed to break the bead, but not get the tire off of ONE rim… So tonight I did some shopping!

Here’s the handy set of tools from Princess Auto, along with my mallet, my trusty screwdriver and wrecking bar…

And of course, I couldn’t do it without one of THESE!

Here was the first victim-er-rim… Fresh off of the 120 I got from Team_Green last summer…

I think my favorite tool is the 12″ beater bar, just LAYING into that puppy with the mallet is VERY satisfying. I’m not really too sure WHAT to do with the other two, I used them for prying and pulling and stuff… After an hour or so, I was left with this!

One thing I’ve learned is that I’m not MAD enough to take off tires… To really RIP them off by hand (without a handy bobcat) truly takes getting some serious anger on! The second one went quicker, ’cause I was getting ornerier, and I wasn’t gonna take no guff from no tire! (of course, my aim is worse when I’m mad, I may need some advice on taking small dints outta the edges of rims now…). In no time flat (okay, 45 minutes or so, plus some cleanup of the grease) I had THESE!

So, one step closer to having the nice lugs from Greensail installed on a nice set of rims. Thanks for the awesome rims Team_Green! I’ll probably STILL sandblast them and paint them, but they’re sure prettier than the ones that were ON the tractor!

Getting some winter rims/tires ready

So, last spring, LTGal suggested I look at getting a set of winter tires/rims for LittleTractor… Ones that I could fill with fluid (for extra weight/traction) and leave the chains on year round…  So, I tried buying two new rims on eBay.  I got ONE that fit a JD 160… and one that didn’t (it was actually for a JD 165, different transmission)…  After a long wrangle, I returned the incorrect rim, and resigned myself to not having winter rims…  Then, over the past couple of months or so, I’ve been yakking with another member of MTF, and he happened to come across another JD 160 rear rim, which (since, strangely enough, it DIDN’T fit his 165  ) he was kind enough to ship out to me… Thanks very much, Matt! So, here’s the rim and tire as I unpacked it out of the box last week.

A bit rough, so I went out and bought a few sanding supplies… Then, yesterday at about 10, I got a call from another MTF member (Greensail), who just lives about 7 minutes from me. He and I had been talking about whether we had any time over the August long weekend for me to get some help from him with taking the tires for BOTH my rims off (strangely enough, I’ve NEVER had to do that before)… He had a bit of time yesterday, so I hopped in the truck with BOTH rims and out I went. I have to say, Greensail has the single most AWESOME bead breaking tool I’ve ever seen! His Bobcat! Those tires never knew what hit them when he dropped the bucket on them!

Once the tires were off, then the big question was, how to get the rims cleaned up… I COULD spend hours and hours sanding them… Or Greensail could, out of the goodness of his heart, fire up his sandblaster!

Here’s BOTH rims, after 20 minutes of sand blasting!

The rim from Matt

The other rim…

So, next step is to really polish up around where the beads seat on both rims, do a bit more detailing and smoothing around the remaining good paint, then prime them and paint them with a rattlecan…

After that I start looking for some good tires to put on…

So here’s one interesting side note… When Matt originally took the pictures of his rim, it had a valve stem sticking out… When it GOT here it didn’t… I didn’t NOTICE the valve stem had disappeared when I first unpacked it… Then LTGal recycled the box… DOH! We were SURE the valve stem must have been somewhere in the packaging… Even after dumpster-diving for the box (she felt pretty bad about having been so keen to recycle), we STILL could not find the valve stem…

So, the mystery of the disappearing valve stem was not solved until yesterday, when we pulled the tire off…. Whatdyathink we found?

So, the depressurization and repressurization of the air shipping must have caused the valve stem to retreat into the tire…. Freaky, huh?

And now… The moment you’ve all been waiting for!

Well, actually, no, I didn’t get it ALL done…  yet…  However, I have much greater hopes of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now, after watching this video on YouTube:

This is Mark from CarbRescue doing the test run and adjustments on my carb!

Pretty amazing, huh? Considering that a month ago it looked like this:

Prepare to be amazed…. VERY amazed!

Well, Mark from CarbRescue finished with my carb this weekend, and sent me some pictures later this afternoon… I think it was well worth waiting for! I am just speechless at how nice this puppy looks! Of course, now I gotta get the REST of the engine looking as nice!

Before

After

We’re still working on figuring out how to get the video to me…

The Titanic Carburetor, So Far…

For those of you just tuning in, you might not be familiar with this:

The Carburetor Raised From the Titanic (aka, the Walbro from my grandfather’s ’67 JD 112)…

Well, here’s some update pics from Mark at CarbRescue… and I must say, I think I made the right decision to send it to him!

And here’s some info from Mark about what he found…

” First, you may or may not be able to tell from the photo but the high speed needle is bent. Something probably hit it or it was dropped at some point..No problem, I make those. Upon looking it over I quickly noticed that the throttle shaft is not the one that belongs on it. Apparently the original was worn and there was wear in the bearing areas so…..someone got a throttle shaft from another carburetor that was larger in diameter and stepped up the carb to accommodate it. Works good in theory however the throttle plate no longer sits in the proper position relative to the idle passages. It was one of those shafts that have a slit cut in it. The plate goes in the slit and screws sandwich the plate in the shaft. The threads for one of the screws was stripped out so they decided to solder it in place. Had a heck of a time getting all that off so I could pull the shaft out. Anyway, I’ll set you up for a bushing job and a throttle shaft which I also make. Also a throttle shaft spring, which this one did not have. Other than that, all you are going to need are some gaskets and seals and you’ll be good to go. The only problem I may have is getting the throttle plate to sit in the right spot..hopefully the guy drilled a straight hole and didn’t move it any from where it should be. I think you will be happy with the way it cleaned up. “

So, yes, really, I wouldn’t have been able to do any of that…

And, the first shots of the cleanup so far!

I am VERY impressed! So far, pretty DANG good! ‘Course, now I’ll have to shine up the rest of the engine that much too! Maybe drop in some chrome!

The Carb has LEFT the building!

Well, while I sit here in Vegas not able to work on tractors and too hot and sweaty and tired to go anywhere, I thought I might as well check on the progress of the carb… And to my surprise, there HAS been some!

Not as much as I would have hoped… I mean, really, after nearly two weeks, I would have thought Mark at CarbRescue could have been starting on it already… But you can’t rush postal strikes!

Ahh…. Venice!

So, thought I’d take a brief holiday from tractors and jetset off to historic Venice! Here’s some pics for your viewing pleasure!

Well, ACTUALLY, I’m in Vegas, at a conference, staying at the Venetian Hotel… So called because of the historic modeling after ancient Venice, complete with a canal and gondolas… Wow, some crazy huh? This Vegas place is pretty wild… And I haven’t even been able to find my way out of this one hotel yet to see the REST of Vegas (dunno if I have the energy… Too hot here, and my knees are killing me… Gonna have to venture out at SOME point tho, ’cause I don’t like paying 4 bucks for a Coke or 6 bucks for a bag of chips here at the hotel..)…. And I haven’t seen a single John Deere since I got here!  And no John Deere store in the shops at THIS hotel!

Another bunch of pictures – The New Parts!

Spending a week away from tractors… Off to a conference in Vegas on Sunday… So I figure I better post a few more pics before I go…

Here’s the NEW PARTS!

The official Gasket Kit of the 1967 HH100!

A variety of belts…

A chunk of key for the pulley…. I know, I didn’t HAVE to buy this from JD, but I did anyway…

Here’s the new oil seals… Of course, I forgot to take careful note of which way they faced in the crankcase…. I’ll have to post some more detailed pictures and get some feedback on that…

The new, $30 wiring harness

The condenser (the old one was pretty disasterized)

So, here’s the REALLY cool one… the points for the Tec HH100 are discontinued, so a number of folks said “Order the Kohler points, they’re identical except for the mounting bracket”…

So, here’s a comparison!

So, once I’m back, I’ll have to get down to putting some of these bits back on…

Got a LITTLE bit of work done on Wednesday night…

Got a little bit of work done last night

Popped out the old oil seals:

Got the wrist pin out (using a socket and socket extension and a teeny tiny hammer)

Here’s the top of the connecting rod:

Got the old rings out, by carefully prying with a small screwdriver:

Here’s the grooves in the piston:

How should I be cleaning them out? Any suggestions?

More anon, gotta go have anniversary dinner!
